Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022

The PSL is back for its seventh season, and it promises to be bigger than ever. Six PSL franchises will compete in high-octane matches over the course of one month to be crowned PSL 2022 champions. Multan Sultans will be looking to become the first team in PSL history to retain their title, while Peshawar Zalmi, Karachi Kings, and Quetta Gladiators will be looking to win their second title and tie their title tally with two-time champions, Islamabad United. Lahore Qalandars, on the other hand, will be looking to win their first PSL title and become the competition’s last team to do so at least once.

PSL 7 will take place at two locations from January 27 to February 27. PSL 2022 will be held at National Stadium Karachi and Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, as the league returns to Pakistan after last year’s second phase was held in the UAE due to the pandemic.

Cricket fans across the country will be looking forward to seeing their favorite Pakistani stars and international superstars light up the action in the PSL 2022.

PSL 2022 Draft Pick Order

Lahore Qalandars have the first-round picks in the platinum, diamond, gold, and emerging categories in the PSL 7 draught, giving them a golden opportunity to assemble a star-studded squad this time around. Multan Sultans, the defending champions, have the second pick in the platinum category, while Quetta Gladiators, the former champions, have the last pick in the platinum category.

Karachi Kings are the only team with only one first-round pick out of 18 total picks. In the fourth round of silver category picks, Karachi will have first dibs. In the PSL 2022 draught, Islamabad United has only two first-round picks, one in the platinum category in the third round and one in the silver category in the fifth round.

PSL 2022 Venues

The seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is returning to Pakistan after the previous tournament’s second phase was relocated to the UAE due to the ongoing pandemic. PSL 2022 will be held in Karachi and Lahore, with the first phase set to take place at National Stadium Karachi and include 15 matches. The second phase will be held at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, which will host 19 matches, including the play-offs and the PSL 7 final.

PSL 2022 Schedule

The PSL 7 Schedule will follow the same format as the previous year. In the group stages preceding the playoffs and final, each team will play each other twice. The tournament will kick off on January 27 with a high-octane clash between the defending champions, Multan Sultans, and former champions, Karachi Kings, at National Stadium Karachi. The PSL 2022 final will take place on February 27 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Draft Rules

All franchises must select at least three players from the platinum category, three players from the diamond category, three players from the gold category, five players from the silver category, two players from the emerging category, and two players from the supplementary category. In PSL 7, franchises are allowed to keep a maximum of eight players from the previous year’s squad, as well as one extra player under right-to-match rules. Each team will be allowed a squad of up to 18 players. In each match, the team can only use four international players and one emerging player in their starting eleven.

Quetta Gladiators

The Quetta Gladiators will be looking to rebound after a disappointing season last year. For the second season in a row, the team finished outside the play-offs and will look to add quality players to help them win the PSL in 2022. Sarfaraz Ahmed will be tasked with leading his troops once more, and the impending arrival of Shahid Afridi will make them a force to be reckoned with.

Peshawar Zalmi

Peshawar Zalmi, one of the most popular teams in the PSL, will be determined to go one step further this time after losing in the final the previous season. Wahab Riaz, Pakistan’s fiery left-arm pacer, will lead the team once more, and with the likely inclusion of David Miller, the team possesses star quality to take PSL 7 by storm. Wahab recently led the Deccan Gladiators to victory in the T10 League, and he will be hoping to replicate his excellent leadership and bowling form in the PSL 2022.

Islamabad United

Islamabad United, the two-time champions, were unable to advance past the eliminators despite a record-breaking season in the group stages the previous season. Shadab Khan, the team’s star all-rounder, has been impressive as captain thus far, and with the added experience of captaining the side for two full seasons, the team is once again a strong favourite for PSL 2022. The star-studded squad will be determined to outperform in the crucial games.

Karachi Kings

Karachi Kings’ team setup has changed as Pakistan’s all-format captain, Babar Azam, has been appointed as the franchise’s captain for PSL 2022, and former England coach, Peter Moores, has been appointed as their head coach for the upcoming season. Kings will be determined to win their second PSL title, and they have enough talent in their lineup to become the second team in Pakistan’s history to do so.

Lahore Qalandars

Lahore Qalandars, the worst performing team in PSL history, will have to shake things up in the upcoming PSL 7. They have finished last in the table five times in six seasons and have only once qualified for the final. They are the only team in PSL history to have never won the championship, and they will be determined to change that. Pakistan’s ace pacer, Shaheen Afridi, is expected to be named captain of the franchise for PSL 7, which would be a welcome change for the Qalandars.

Lahore will need to be wise in the PSL 2022 draught and build a balanced squad if they want to be a title contender.

Multan Sultans

Multan Sultans, the defending champions, will be determined to become the first team in PSL history to retain the title and only the second team with two PSL titles. The team, led by star wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, has a strong squad and will look to add quality in the PSL 2022 draught in order to build on their success from the previous season.

They have a good mix of youth and experience, which will be important for them in PSL 7.
